An international team of archaeologists work in Alcacer do Sal to bring visibility to the African roots of the Alentejo and reflect on the social and environmental impacts generated by slavery in Portugal. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, millions of men, women and children were kidnapped on the African continent. Most of them ended up on farms on the American continent, particularly in Brazil. However, many thousands of Africans were taken to Portugal, mainly to the Alentejo. Although the presence of Africans in the Alentejo is very old, the roots of several communities in the Sado valley are linked to the human trafficking that took place from the 15th century onwards, a story that is less well known, but is preserved in the memory and traditions of the Alentejo.
